Hazel Tindall grew up in a small village on the west mainland of Shetland. She learned to knit at age 4, and over the years has added crochet and spinning to her skills. She has twice been a presenter and workshop leader at the Handweaver's Guild of America's Convergence conferences. Hazel has been captivated by Fair Isle patterns for years, and one of her Fair Isle sweaters appears in Ann Feitelson's book The Art of Fair Isle Knitting. Hazel's other distinction is that of winning the "World's Fastest Knitter" competition.

Hazel first won the title in 2004, when she knitted her way into the record books by knitting 255 loops in three minutes. She successfully defended her title on February 17th, 2008, and in doing so beat her personal best by knitting 262 loops. The current Guinness Record holder, Miriam Tegels from Holland, who took part in this competition, only managed 243 loops.
