Military installations and training grounds impinge upon the coastal, marine and air-space of the Moray Firth. Localised habitat destruction has been a result, although in some cases damage is believed to have been less than if other developments had taken place. Wildlife disturbance from, for example, bombing ranges, low-flying aircraft and submarine exercise areas is poorly understood.

RAF Tain is one of the most heavily used air weapons ranges in the United Kingdom, mainly due to its close proximity to Lossiemouth airfield and low flying areas. The RAF airfield at Lossiemouth(70) has been described as Britain's most important frontline station and Kinloss(69) as the RAF's principal anti-submarine warfare base.

One of the main historical military sites on the Moray Firth coast is that of Fort George(71) near Ardersier.
